Default opening embeded excel files WITHOUT excel

If I have an embedded Excel file in a Word document and then send the Word
document to someone who does NOT have Excel, can that person open the Excel
file that is embedded in Word. I tried it and couldn't get it to work. I
get an error message about not being able to find a program.

Your test was successful! The recipient needs Excel (or another program that
can read Excel files)

As you discovered, the recipient also needs Excel. Instead of
embedding the workbook, what about an image instead? In Excel, select
the portion you want to include, hold Shift and go to Edit/Copy
Picture.

Thanks. I would have liked my test to be a failure ;~). Any suggestions on
"other" programs that can read Excel files OTHER than Excel. Maybe some
freeware or sharware program that can be used just for this purpose (sharing
embedded Excel files with people)?

It may not help, but if you have the old Excel filter (linked from my web
site downloads page), you can *open* or *insert* Excel files in Word. Once
inserted Excel is no longer required. Such files do not have any Excel
functionality and are not linked back to Excel.

An Excel Viewer is available as a free download from Microsoft. See
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Alternatively, the free OpenOffice suite (http://www.openoffice.org/) can
read Excel files - but be aware that it does so without official knowledge
of the file format so could get it wrong on occasion.

Thank you all for the great advice. The Excel Viewer might work. I didn't
realize Microsoft had something like that.
