Default Word 2003 display only a portion of caption text in table of figures

i am putting together a document that has come figures with mighty
long captions... i do not want all of the caption text in these
figures to go into the table of figures... the only way i have found
to do this is to use a line break in the middle of the caption... but
that just makes the caption look messed up. is there any way to break
up a caption so not all of it goes into in the table of figures? I
have tried highlighting a potion of the caption and changing the style
to "normal" but that doesn't do anything... the full caption still
shows up int the table of figures... please help!!

Did you update the TOF after changing the style? Did you insert a Style
Separator?

Yes i did update the TOF but it did not change. I am not sure what
you mean by a "style separator"

Now I wonder if it is possible to eliminate sections of a caption....
ie a typical caption is " floor-to-floor vibration ratios (markers
without lines) superimposed on predicted floor-to-floor vibration
ratios output by the mathematical model with optimization (markers
with lines)"

in the TOF i would want to want to remove the "(markers without
lines)" and "(markers with lines)" any ideas?

For that sort of situation, I think you're going to be reduced to using TC
fields to dictate the exact text to be included.
