Default Excel table resizes when edited

I have an Excel table in my Word document, which is formatted and sized the way
I want.
I then try to add content to the cells via right-clicking and selecting
Worksheet Object Edit.
Regardless of whether I add content or not, when I click off the table to go
back to normal Word editing mode, the Excel table resizes itself.

I've attached a screenshot showing what happens, but in case it doesn't work,
you can view the screenshot he
http://people.aapt.net.au/~joian/forums/Word_Excel.gif
The top screen shows the table before editing (the way it should be), and the
second screen shows the resized table.

I'm running Office 2007 on Vista Home Premium.
Thanks!

If you insert an object it will adapt to the current margins. If you then
make changes to that object, they will remain until you update the object
(by returning to Excel to make changes).

One simple solution is to use Paste Special HTML Format, with the Link box
checked. This will insert the Excel cells as they are formatted in Excel and
will maintain any changes made in the Excel file. To edit that Excel file,
right click the pasted image. Link Worksheet Object Edit Link. If you want
to alter the size of the pasted image, use the Bitmap option rather than the
HTML Format.

Thanks for that Graham,

I still have some problems though...
As you said, pasting as HTML will make it resize each update. Bitmap however
doesn't let me update it when I center it on the page.
Bitmap also removes the top and left-side borders for some reason.
Any ways around this?

You'll save yourself a whole lot of grief if you set it up exactly as you
want in Excel then paste with the HTML format options - which should insert
exactly what you have in Excel. I also see the bitmap border problem, try
instead Picture - Windows Metafile.

Thanks again Graham!
Pasting as 'Picture - Windows Metafile' did the trick.

Another question I have, though somewhat unrelated, regards saving as PDF:
Is there a way to save this document as PDF without the font from the Excel
table looking yuck?
All the fonts look fine, except for those in the table itself. I'm guessing it's
because Word embeds the font for normal text, but can't for text from Excel's
table...?
At the moment, it's saving the table as a bitmap (I think), which doesn't look
very nice.
Any ideas?

Actually, I just tried your earlier suggestion and pasted as HTML. Had to do a
bit of tweaking, but now it updates without resizing, and the PDFs look better.
I think it's all good now, thanks again for all the help!
