Delete the empty paragraphs within them.

Press the ¶ button on the Standard toolbar to display nonprinting
characters. Paragraph marks will display as ¶. Delete the ones you
find in the header.

Note that, depending on your version of Word, it may not be possible
to delete all paragraph marks; you may be stuck with the final one.
