Default Table of Contents using Styles

Hi,

We are creating a TOC that has just one level. We would like to sort the
TOC alphabetically by heading rather than by page number. Is there a way we
can do that?

Thanks,

An alphabetical listing is not a TOC but an index.

I left something out - we are creating the TOC using styles. It is a legal
document, an agreement. This is what the TOC looks like, manually typed:

Page
Apples and oranges Article X 39
Bananas Article II 3
Dates Article IV 22
Peaches Article I 55

We would like to automate the TOC rather than having it remain manually
typed. Our document is set up using styles.

What would you recommend as the best way to create the TOC in this type of
scenario?

Thanks!

It's still an index. I don't believe there's any way to do it with a TOC.
You could create TC fields that include the title and section, generate the
TOC, unlink it, and sort, but then it could not be updated.

If the number of items that you want to list is not too large, you
could create it semi-automatically, by adding cross-references to
paragraph text, paragraph numbers, and page numbers. And, assuming
that each item is in a separate paragraph (or in a table row), you
could sort the items alphabetically.

I discovered a work-around that makes this easy.

After creating the TOC, select all entries except the first entry. Then use
Table/Sort to alphabetize all of the entries...except the first entry. Select
the first entry and manually drag it to the correct location.

But note that any manual changes will be overwritten the next time you
update the TOC.
