Default Best font for Roman numerals?

Is there a best font for displaying Roman numerals in the body of text (as
opposed to their use as page numbers in footers)?

A serif font will better approximate the "lines" than a sans serif one, but
there isn't any font that's totally convincing.

Ironically, Arial Unicode MS is one of the "large" Unicode fonts that
include roman numerals as single characters (that is, a single character for
III, one for IV, etc.), but they're (not surprisingly) Arial and look
terrible.

Thumbs up Answer: Best font for Roman numerals?

There isn't necessarily a "best" font for displaying Roman numerals in the body of text, as it largely depends on personal preference and the overall design aesthetic of the document. However, there are some fonts that are commonly used for their clear and legible Roman numerals.

One popular font for Roman numerals is Times New Roman, which is a classic serif font that is easy to read and has well-designed Roman numerals. Another option is Garamond, which is also a serif font with elegant and clear Roman numerals.

If you're looking for a sans-serif font, Arial and Helvetica are both good options with clear and simple Roman numerals. However, keep in mind that sans-serif fonts may not be as traditional or formal as serif fonts.
  1. Ultimately, the best font for Roman numerals will depend on the specific context and design of your document.
  2. It's always a good idea to experiment with different fonts and see which one looks best for your particular use case.
