Default Hyperlink in non-active document

I am trying a fairly complex office application that originates out of access
2003. My issue is that once I open a html file into word I would like to add
a hyperlink to the end of the document a without having Word be open/active
on the users screen.

From what I am gathering, I need to have a "selection.range" to create a
hyperlink, but I do not have this option when Word is not active.

Any suggestions?
