[ADKR]

I sent myself a Word file attached to an email. I opened it and worked on it
for a long time. I hit "save" and left. I forgot to hit "save as" and save
it to my desktop. Now when I opened the file again none of the work was
saved. Is it lurking somewhere or am I doomed to start over. Thanks.

Hi ADKR,

No, I do not belive you have lost everything. You saved your changes to a
temporary file, and while I cannot possibly know where that file is on your
computer...I do have a suggestion to find it. Go back into your email and
open the same attachment. Once it opens in word, go to save as and when it
opens the save as box, look at the chain of where it would automatically be
saved. Either write down this chain so you won't forget, or do a screen
print. Once you have that info, don't actually save it, but close out of
there and go back into Word and find follow the chain...you should be able to
find your past saved temporary file that way.

(Sound of head banging against desk). I think that you are right... but, I
already opened and then saved the file again from the email. Great
suggestion though! Thanks.

I don't think that matters...I think when saving to temporary files, it
doesn't save under the same name. Unless it specifically said something like
that filename already exits would you like to overwrite existing file...I
think your new save would not take the old save's place. I could be wrong,
and I'm continuously watching this post to see if any of these Word MVP
people post an answer cause I'm curious as to how to retrieve something like
this as well.

I went back to the email attachment, opened it and tried "save as". That
took me to my documents folder. There was no file there already saved (I
even looked into "hidden files". When I did save it, it appeared in
documents. So, whether or not I have destroyed the one I was looking for or
not, it doesn't appear there. I, too, hope that one of the MVP has the magic
answer.

I don't have Vista, so I'm not sure if it works the same, and I'm sure you've
already looked here...but I thought I'd mention it just in case. With XP,
when you click on the Start Menu, it has a "My Recent Documents" tab where if
you let your mouse sit on it for a second, it will show a list of all the
recent documents you've been working on. My list actually goes back a month
or so.

Again, you've probably already tried this, but I thought it might be worth a
shot.

Everything is worth trying when I don't know the answer. Thanks. The
document did not appear there even though documents that I worked on
yesterday did. The haunting thought is that I may not have saved the
document. In a rush I might have hit "no". Anyway, I have caught up to
where I was, but am still interested in a solution is one is availabale.

said. It is very similar to your idea. I don't have time right now to
