Default Mail Merge and a Protected Document

I have a form that has protected sections (tables with drop down form fields
and text form fields). I added all of the merge codes to the document and
then ran the merge to a new document. My drop down form fields stayed in
tact but my text fields became 5 spaces. Is there a way to do a "search and
replace" to search for the 5 spaces (which used to be the text form field)
and replace it with a text form field?

Thank you so much Doug. With the help of one our programers defining the
database, it worked perfect! This saved us hours of work.
