Can anyone help me? Nobody at MS seems to be able to answer my question,
unless I pay $49 for tech support.

All I want to know is -

1) Have the bullets/numbering bugs in Word 2002 been fixed in Word 2007?
These were pretty severe bugs, where the style you've set up will suddenly
change, and where all your numbered lists throughout the doc get hosed when
you insert another numbered section before them.
2) Have template been improved? They were a disaster in Word 2002.
3) Have cross-referencing abilities improved? Very weak in Word 2002.

Thank you anyone who can help me out with this. Debating updating, although
I really don't like the look of the new interface.... but if these major
bugs are gone, I will do it.

Word 2002 was a weaker program than either 2000 or 2003, but the formatting
issues relating to numbering have not changed much and in any case can be
controlled by proper use of numbered styles - see

Templates? If you don't like the supplied templates, make your own. There is
a raft of new designs available for Word 2007, but whether you will like
them is anyone's guess.

Cross referencing? What problems are you having with that?

I set my numbering styles properly, but still have a lot of problems with
inserting more numbered procedures within the document. When I do that, all
the procedures after that one get renumbered way out of whack. There is
something about the Restart numbering/Continue numbering that seems to also
reformat all my bullets styles. Very frustrating when working in a large
document.

I set up my own template but again, pulling styles from it into other
documents using the organizer has been horrible - again, many styles revert
to some bizarre setting that wasn't in either the template or the original
doc.

I have done a search on the internet and seen that many many people have the
same issues with templates/styles, especially bullets and numbering.

I debated using a master document for this book at one time but with past
experience of corruption of master docs, decided against it. Again, if you do
a search on the internet, you will see many pages dedicated to the problems
in Word master docs. So using the cross-referencing feature in 2002 becomes
very difficult in a large document, because you can't, for example, bring up
just all heading 2s in the xref box. Instead, you've only got the choice of
all heading styles references at once (I have 100s so it makes it really hard
to find the right one) or of bookmarking the particular one you went and then
xrefing it. Not very usable. I was hoping for a more powerful xref ability in
2007, something a little closer to Adobe FrameMaker's abilities.

Word 2007 uses cross referencing in the same way as earlier versions. I can
see that having the ability to list only a particular heading level would be
useful, but the lack of that is not a bug but a limitation. You would not
gain anything from changing to Word 2007 in this respect.

Master documents are, as you suggest, best avoided.
