Thumbs up Answer: I want to insert half of a space instead of a whole space in word.

Yes, you can insert half a space in Microsoft Word. Here's how:
  1. Click on the "Insert" tab in the ribbon at the top of the screen.
  2. Click on the "Symbol" button in the "Symbols" section of the ribbon.
  3. Click on "More Symbols" at the bottom of the drop-down menu.
  4. In the "Symbol" dialog box, select "Arial Unicode MS" from the "Font" drop-down menu.
  5. Scroll down until you see the "Figure Space" character (it looks like a square with a number in it).
  6. Click on the "Insert" button to insert the Figure Space character into your document.
  7. Highlight the Figure Space character and press "Ctrl" + "D" on your keyboard to open the "Font" dialog box.
  8. In the "Font" dialog box, change the "Size" to half of the font size you are using in your document (e.g. if you are using 12-point font, change the size to 6 points).
  9. Click "OK" to close the "Font" dialog box.

Now you have a half-space character that you can use in your document. Simply type a regular space, then insert the half-space character before typing the next word. The half-space character will be half the width of a regular space, allowing you to create more precise spacing between words.

Yes, you can insert a half-space in Microsoft Word. Here's how:
  1. Place your cursor where you want to insert the half-space.
  2. Press the "Ctrl" + "Shift" + "Spacebar" keys on your keyboard at the same time.
  3. A half-space will be inserted between the words.

Alternatively, you can also use the "Advanced Symbol" feature to insert a half-space:
  1. Place your cursor where you want to insert the half-space.
  2. Click on the "Insert" tab in the ribbon at the top of the screen.
  3. Click on the "Symbol" button in the "Symbols" section.
  4. Select "More Symbols" at the bottom of the drop-down menu.
  5. In the "Symbol" tab, select "Latin-1 Supplement" from the "Subset" drop-down menu.
  6. Scroll down until you find the "Half-width/Half-height" section.
  7. Select the "Half-width Space" symbol and click on the "Insert" button.
  8. The half-space will be inserted between the words.

In the Insert Symbol dialog, you'll find an "en space" character at
Unicode number 2002. There is no shortcut key assigned to it by
default, but you can assign one by clicking the Shortcut Key button in
the dialog.

If you don't need it often, you can just type the number 2002 in the
document and press Alt+X.

My apologies, an en space is bigger than you want. There are two
others, "thin space" at 2009 and "hair space" at 200A, that may suit
your needs better.

Default creating a half space in a document

Thanks for your extra suggestions about the possibility of "thin space" and "hair space" which, until I read your reply, I was completely unaware.

I can see how "hair space" could be very useful for many writers who like to allow a little extra space before a question or exclamation mark. Such marks can get lost under modern word-processing/typesetting but the use of a full space can be too much and also increases the possibility of the mark dropping down to the next line as an orphan.

Is there any way of automating the insertion of a "hair space" so that instead of typing in 200A followed by ALT+X, the writer simply presses a ? but will get it displayed preceded with an "hair space" ?

ps I use Word 2003 - but I'm not aware that either 2007 or 2010 versions make allowance for this.

Default creating a half space in a document

Simply set up an "AutoCorrect As You Type" entry, with the question
mark in the first column and the small space and question mark in the
second column.

(Note that when Word is set to French language, it uses nonbreaking
space, not thin space, before such punctuation. But in typing English,
whether to add space before a question mark surely depends on the font
you're using?)

Depending on how often you need to do it: if it is only now and again, I
achieve odd spacings by simply making the space a different point size. Do
similar with line spacing when trying to cram stuff into text boxes.
