Default I cannot generate a Table of Contents

I've marked my copy by selecting Alt.Shift O feature. When I go to where I
want to insert the TOC, I get: " TOC \O "1-4" \H \Z \U" and nothing else.

In playing with it, I can right click it and toggle the field codes, which
then turn to text, but the text that appears is not what I marked for my TOC.

I am using Word 2003.

Thanks for any help you can give.

To generate a TOC based on TC fields (which is definitely the hard way), you
must check the box for "Table entry fields" in the Table of Contents Options
dialog. You may also need to clear the other check boxes or clear the
numbers from the style list to prevent other styles from being included. For
more see http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html and

Default I cannot generate a Table of Contents

You have inserted a TOC that will generate from outline levels instead of
your marked entries. You can change this from the dialog that opens when you
click the Options button in the TOC dialog or, if you want to edit the field
you have, replace \O "1-4" with \F and remove "\U". You'll need to update
the field to generate the TOC again.

You also need to use Alt-F9 to toggle the document view to show field values
rather than field codes.

Since tables of contents are usually lists of headings, you might want to
think again about how you are creating the TOC - using styles or outline
levels to build the TOC is a lot less work and easier to maintain.
