Default hide/show styles doesn't seem to work for me

I like to have the heading styles available from scratch so that i can format
my documents with clean outlining quickly and easily.
What I do is apply the "show" poroperty to a style in the Manage Styles
dialog box / Recommend tab, check the new documents based ... radio button
and click ok.
The styles i choose then are added to the ribbon so i can use them quickly,
however when i change between style sets, these settings are lost.
Am i trying to use this functionality the wrong way, or should they be saved?
