Default Problem with Page Setup

I am creating rather long documents. When I change Page Setup in any way
either by paper orientation or margin changes, other pages of the document
change. I am using Selected text to make the changes. At times, the whole
document just changes when I start Word.
Now I have a new problem, Selected text does not appear if I highout more
than one page.
Is this a general problem with Word or is there a solution???

Insert section breaks and then choose "This section."
