Default Enabling Chinese Characters in Word & Windows

I have done this before, but I am missing a step...

I have followed the instructions for Windows 2000 in
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=177561

and I use the icon in the bottom right of the screen to chose a new input
locale, but when I start typing (in pinyin) to bring up the character, it
doesn't bring up characters...

What am I missing?

When you have typed your pinyin did you remember to type space. This brings
up the list of characters from which to choose.

I assume also you have selected Chinese as the language.
