Default Go back to the mail merge system you had 10 years ago. With every.

Why does Microsoft feel that it is necessary with each new release to take
something that works well and is easy to use, and screw it up? I have spent
the last HOUR trying to take a data file (from an older version of Word) and
create a simple checklist. It would have taken 2 minutes in the 98 version.

Again, congratulations, folks. With every release, the system gets more
complicated--to do the same thing! Geez.

Either select Toolbars from the View menu and check the Mailmerge toolbar -
it gives you all the functionality that you need - or select Customize from
the Tools menu and select the All Commands category on the Commands tab and
locate the Mail Merge Helper item and left click on it and drag it onto a
toolbar. You will then have the old interface back.
