Default strange characters in document

Documents suddenly become unreadable---as if a virus has changed all the
characters in the document. Some of the text of a document is below.

Default strange characters in document

That's a document opened as if it were plain text. Check the 'Files of type'
setting on the File Open dialog.

Default strange characters in document

Doesn't look like "Plain text" to me; there's an example of that phenomenon
at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/RecoverText.htm
