strange characters in document
Documents suddenly become unreadable---as if a virus has changed all the
characters in the document. Some of the text of a document is below. strange characters in document
That's a document opened as if it were plain text. Check the 'Files of type'

strange characters in document
Doesn't look like "Plain text" to me; there's an example of that phenomenon
