I disagree. *Turn them on from time to time as required, but editing
or reading with them turned on is a pain. *It would be nice if there

If they're always on, situations where it would be "required" to do so
wouldn't arise.

It's often _very_ important to know whether your indent is a true
paragraph indent or a tab.

A 50% color would indeed be an improvement.

In Mac versions they are in fact grey. I agree this would probably be an
improvement (but perhaps even more confusing to users?).
