Default Word opens when cicking on word file, but never opens file

Word 2002 Small Business Edition. When clicking on file to open it in Word,
Word Opens, but the file is never presented in the Word Application. If you
click on File Open, all the docs are shown and any of them can be opened with
this method. Please advise
