When I modify Page Setup, e.g. Margins, and then click Default, intending
that all future new documents will have the new Page Setup features, the new
features only apply until I close MS Word. On re-opening MS Word the
original features apply, and the updates have disappeared.

The same thing happens if I try to modify a template, e.g. Normal, and then
click Save. On re-opening MS Word, all changes are lost.

What causes this, and how do I get around it, please?

If you are explicitly opening Normal.dot and modifying and saving it (and if
this is a real change that actually gets saved--see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/SaveViewAndZoom.htm), then it must be that
Normal.dot is being refreshed at startup. This is unlikely to happen unless
you're on a corporate network. If you're on a standalone machine, there must
be some other explanation (viz., that Normal.dot wasn't actually saved).
