Default Excluding words from a caption

I wish to prevent some words that are in a caption from displaying or
printing in my table of contents. For example, I might have an
acknowledgment that needs to be in the caption but which is unnecessary in
the table of contents.

Is there a way of doing this please?

See http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/RunInSidehead.htm for the general
principle. In this case, you'd use a different style for the acknowledgment.
