Default mail merge field too short

I have a problem with mail merge to word from excel. Both are 2007 for me,
but I need it to work for other people with 2003 as well.
What happens is that one of the fields is a text field from an excel-cell
which contains a result from a function which can be more that 255 characters
now and then. And then in the merged word-file I don't see all text. Does
anyone have a way around this?
One solution I found in another thread was to make sure the first cell of
the column contains more than 255 chars. Unfortunately, the input for the
function (I wrote it in vba) is the name of the client, which is sorted
alfabettically. So I cannot make sure that the first cell is a lot of text.
I also found a suggestion to change the way word reads from excel to dde,
but I could not find this option in 2007.

To be able to specify the DDE method of connection in Office 2007, from the
Office menu, select Word Options in the bottom border and then go to the
Advance item and scroll down to the General section and check the box
against the "Confirm File Format Conversion at Open" item.

Hope this helps.
