Default My Docs & Documents & Settings problems

Hello, I had to recreate the folder My Documents in Documents and
Settings/owner/My Documents due to an error that I made that deleted the
original. I copied and paste all files that were in the stand alone My
Documents folder.

Now when I save a document it is placed into My documents. When I go to
Documents and Settings/owner/my documents, the file is not there. This just
started happening because all of My Document files prior to this week are in
both My Documents and Documents and Settings.

My question is when a file is saved in Word (2003) does it automatically
save itself in both My Documents and Documents and Settings/Owner/My
Documents? Any solutions if it is not saving itself in both folders?
Thanks, Bob

In Word, go to the Tools Options File Locations dialog.
Double-click the "Documents" item at the top of the list. That will
show you where Word wants to put your documents, and you can change it
to any other folder if you want to.

Word never saves in two places at once unless you specially create a
macro to do so (as in http://www.gmayor.com/automatically_backup.htm).
But you really should not be saving documents in two places just
because you screwed up -- you should fix the problem by getting rid of
the folder that isn't under your user name.

Thanks Jay, I deleted the folder that I created in Documents and Settings (My
documents). The redirect that is in file location goes to Documents and
settings/owner/my recent documents.

One more question. I noticed in my Recent Documents folder a lot of short
cuts and also a foldercalled My Documents with all the files. Is this default
having the short cuts and the my document file? I also have (default) a
separate My Documents that is listed separately from C:/ in Explorer.
Anyway, if this looks correct then the problem is solved.

I notice that when I save a file now it is saved in My Documents and also in
Recent Documents. I guess this is the way it is to be set up. Thanks, Bob

Sorry. "My recent documents" is not a place to store anything. It is
supposed to store shortcuts for a period of time. It is what you see when
you look under the Start Menu. Storing real document there will lead to
confusion, at a minumum and may result in your real documents being deleted
when they have aged. (I don't know the deletion part but wouldn't want to
risk it either.)

Under tools/options/file location/Documents, I have documents &
settings/owner/recent/my files. I assume this is why a folder for my
documents is there along with the short cuts. What should I place here, in
the file location/documents? Suggestions?

Thanks for your help, I found out that by re-setting the properties to
default by right clicking on My Documents in the Explorer box was what I
needed. I transfered the My Documents that were in the My Recent Documents
(short cuts only now) to a folder by default in Doc & Settings/Owner/My
Documents. Everything is back as it use to be and in sync. Thanks again, Bob
