Default text auto formatting

Somehow when i alter text eg make a word BOLD, the entire document goes BOLD.
i then have to click the UNDO arrow to get what i wanted in the first place.
This is driving me nuts.
Have I inadvertently turned something on? i want to turn it OFF.
Thanks
