In a word document, all of the sudden there are Paragraph markers you know
the backward p and when I do other things like spacing or whatever it puts
dots in. How did it get there and how do I get rid of it?

Did you click the ¶ button on the toolbar? What happens if you click it
again?

The non-printing characters are activated by either clicking the Pilcrow icon
(backwards P), or Ctrl+Shft+8, or selecting the Formatting Marks under Tools,
Options, View dialog.
