Cross-Reference Widow/Orphan Control
I've added cross-references to figures into my document. However, it seems
like when I save and exit the document, any cross references that are near the end of the line get a hard return added in front of them when I re-open the document. The only thing I can think of is that a widow/orphan control is being enforced, but I can't seem to fix it. Its become a big problem because some of the cross-references are included in bulleted items and when I save and re-open the file the hard returns that are inserted in front of the cross-references are creating new bullets. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated because I'm tired of having to delete the returns manually every time I open the document. |

Cross-Reference Widow/Orphan Control
Widows and orphans relate only to ends of page/column and not to lines. A
cross reference is merely a field and its insertion in a line should merely insert the part of the caption you have selected from the dialog into the paragraph at the cursor position. I can think of no mechanism that would automatically insert a hard return in front of such a field. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org Jessi wrote: I've added cross-references to figures into my document. Cross-Reference Widow/Orphan Control
The only mechanism that I can think of that could insert a hard return within
a cross-reference is if the cross-reference is to a Bookmark, and the Bookmark includes a hard-return. Jessi - from your description you did not cross-reference to Bookmarks but to Figures as listed in the Reference Type: If you did, check what is included within the Bookmark, Tools, Options, View tick Bookmarks. You will now see light grey square brackets which denote what is included in that Bookmark. You don't mention what Word verison and OS your are using. Cross-Reference Widow/Orphan Control
Note that Word creates a bookmark when you insert a cross-reference to a
caption, heading, numbered item, etc. If you then press Enter (to insert a new paragraph) at the beginning of that caption, the paragraph break is inserted inside the bookmark and is picked up by the cross-reference.
