Default Footnotes running to the next Page - Word xp

Hi

I have a document where some of the footnotes although there appears to be
plenty of space runs onto the next page. Is there parameters that Word
follows which dictates when is runs over onto the next page?

Also the document seems to fix itself sometimes only after a number of days.
Do you know is there a known issue with Word XP.

Thanks
Ailish
