Default Form Field Errors

I am inserting a numeric form field into a Word 6 document. The field is
formatted as numeric, 10 characters, number format "0". Then I protect the
form and store it as a template. However, any time I produce a document
based on the template, it allows me to place up to 10 text or numeric
characters into the field. What am I doing wrong. Any help would be
appreciated.
Thanks.

Already answered. The setting doesn't have any effect until you move out of
the field. It doesn't stop you entering anything you like within the field.

We've recently discovered that it doesn't prevent you from entering anything
you like in the field, *and* it doesn't give you any kind of error message,
either. If the field is numeric and you create a number mask, then when you
enter numbers, they're formatted with that mask, but you can type your name
(or any other alphabetic text) and Word accepts it without demur. Clearly a
bug, and seems to be new in Word 2003 unless we're just now noticing it.
