In Word 2007 in have been writing documents and e-mailing them as attachments
to people who can't open them, though when I e-mail them to myself in Hotmail
I can open them.

As attachments, these documents appear with the extension ".docx." What does
that "x" mean? Is that the problem? Why would word docs have an "x" in the
extension?

How do I overcome this problem?

That is the format for documents produced with Word 2007. You can however
save documents in Word 97-2003 format and you can also set that as the
default format by clicking on the Office button and then on Word Options in
the bottom border and then on Save and change the setting in the Save files
in this format: pulldown to Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc).

The extension indicates the native OOXML file format used by Office 2007.
Whether an email recipient can open them depends on two factors: what
version of Office/Word they have & whether they have the necessary updates
applied. About the only versions that *can't* open them are those that
precede Office 2000.

If necessary you can save in the previous (.doc) format and you can set that
format as your default if you wish. Keep in mind, however, that .doc will
not support the newer features available in 2007.

You could include in your e-mail the following link and advise the people who
you send the documents to to download the piece of free software from that
link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

It is from Microsoft so is safe.

This allows people to open documents with .docx extensions. When they save
the documents to their system they need to change the file type to their
particular version of Word document.

Hope this helps.

While that advice may hold good if you are exchanging documents with
friends, you cannot expect users to download extra software just to read
your documents - and in the case of the business community, they simply
won't do so. You should send your documents in a format that they can be
read by the recipient.
