There are a number of reasons why this might happen.

Sometimes, it's enough to check Word Tools|Options|General|"Confirm
conversion at open", then reconnect to your Excel source and select the DDE
option when offered. This is the way that Word used to do this, and it
relies on your having Excel on your system.

Otherwise, please hae a look through the reasonably recent entries in this
group about Excel (this subject comes up time and again). Using Google
Groups to find stuff may help.
