Default Word 2007 - Adding text to outline numbering in heading style?

Does anyone know whether it still is possible, and if so how, to add text to
numbering in heading styles (e.g., Section #; Paragraph #). It is possible to
add text in Word 2003 through the Modify Style dialog box, but the Outline
Numbered and List Styles tabs have disappeared from Numbering in the Format
submenu of the Modify Style dialog box, leaving only Bulleted and Numbered
tabs. If the functions performed by the missing tabs have been moved
somewhere else, I haven't been able to find them.

To edit an existing outline-numbered list in Word 2007: Place the insertion
point in the top-level paragraph (usually Heading 1 if this is numbered
headings). Then, on the Home tab of the ribbon, click Multilevel List, and
then click Define New Multilevel List. This presents a dialog box similar to
the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog box of previous versions.

Note that if/when you are creating a new list, you may find it easier to
create a list style. It can be (re-)applied to text via the Multilevel List
button, where it will be listed under "List Styles" (as soon as at least
one has been created), and you can edit an existing list style by
right-clicking it and choosing Modify from the context menu. When setting up
a list style, you should still attach each numbering level to a paragraph
style, as in previous versions of Word, though.

Thank you for the tip. Without having tried it, however, at first glance it
looks like a rather complicated fix by Microsoft for something that wasn't
broken. Perhaps in time I'll come to love it.

I reckon there are not that many users out there who'd say that
numbering is not "broken", one way or another ... ;-)

That said, I've found a numbering approach over the years that, w/o list
styles, worked reasonably well up to Word 2003. In 2007, I don't see an
easy way around them anymore, and yes, through the UI, it seems like a
bit more work.

An easy way to make list styles more user friendly would be to supply the
built-in numbering formats as list styles.

that would do away with lots of direct numbering formatting, I guess.

Interesting thought.
