the page up and page down keys have stopeed working in word 2003. they work
fine in every other aplication apart from word. has anybody seen this before?

Perhaps your keys have been reassigned. Check Tools - Customize - Keyboard -
All Commands - PageDown.
In the assigned keys section is there something there? If not, click in the
New Shortcut Key box hit the PageDown
key. Click Assign.
Don't know if it will help but it doesn't hurt to try.

Alternatively, are you in a form, or other sort of protected document, where
your movements are restricted?

If you click on Tools and there's an unprotect option, it's probably a good
starting point.
