Default Number formats from Excel into mail merge

A colleague has a list of numbers in an Excel spreadsheet to merge into a
letter.

They want to preserve the comma and 2 decimal places in the source Excel
file, but when mail merge is run the number is converted to text and the
formatting is lost in the letter.

Is there any way in Excel or Word to preserve the format (to save retyping
all the numbers in text format)?

(for Excel & Word 2003)

Thanks
