Default What happened to F4? Can I fix it?

I'm using Word 2003 (11.6502.6360) SP1. When I type a word or phrase, then
move the cursor and press F4 to repeat the typing elsewhere, the first letter
is missing - every time. This is a real inconvenience, as I have relied on F4
for many years. Is there any way I can fix this?
Thanks!

If you have typed the initial phrase over a selection, Word regards the
first letter as replacing the selection and the rest as typing. This can
easily be seen in the Undo list. I also regard this as annoying, but not as
annoying as the total uselessness of F4 wrt Table Properties.
