I have created a word document with fields and check boxes using developer
and all is fine. It is to be used on a website for people to download.
Although the file has been uploaded and a link is in place, it opens a folder
with zipped documents inside.

If you have saved as a .docx (which actually is a ZIP file under the hood),
then it will show a .zip extension when downloaded. Instruct users to change
the extension to .docx, then open. Better still, save in Word 97-2003 .doc
format.
