Default Styles list unwanted Asian language

I am working in a Word 2003 document that somebody else created. Many, but
not all, of the formatting styles list the Language under €śReveal Formatting€ť
as follows:
(Asian) Chinese (PRC)
(Other) English (U.S.)
In the Reveal Formatting sidebar, clicking on the Language link opens a
Language window in which English (U.S.) is the only default language.
Therefore, I cannot remove the Asian or Chinese designation which is showing
as the main language selection in Reveal Formatting. I have been googling all
over the place to try to get rid of the Asian language in any way possible,
with no success. I have tried the following, from simple to complex:
1. Select the entire document with Ctrl+a, then from the menu, Tools /
Language / Set Language / English (U.S.). No change.
2. Create a new blank document, then paste in the original document. Also
from the menu, Insert / File / docname.doc. Either way, no change.
3. From the menu, click File / Save As, and in that window click on the
Tools dropdown, then Save Options, and uncheck the €śEmbed linguistic data€ť
box (yes, it was checked). Save the file, try (1) and (2) again, etc. No
change.
4. From the menu, Tools / Options and under the Compatibility tab, verified
that no boxes were checked.
5. In Windows, select Start / All Programs / Microsoft Office / MS Office
Tools / MS Office 2003 Language Settings. In the Enabled Languages tab,
English (U.S.) is the only (grayed out) entry under Enabled Languages. Note,
Chinese (PRC) is not an option in the available languages dropdown. At any
rate, no change to the problem document after exiting language settings.
6. In Windows, select Start / Control Panel / Regional and Language Options
(a.k.a. intl.cpl), and click the Languages tab. The supplemental language
support check boxes (Install files for complex script and right-to-left
languages (including Thai) and Install files for East Asian languages) are
both unchecked already. Under Text services and input languages, clicking the
Details button verifies that English (United States) is the only installed
service, which includes Keyboard €“ U.S. I clicked on the Advanced tab and
just for laughs checked €śTurn off advanced text services.€ť Rebooted, etc.
After all that, no change.
7. Downloaded, installed and ran rhdtool.exe, which shows up in the File
menu as €śRemove hidden data...€ť Saved the original document and created a
parallel version with the add-in as directed. No change.

Note also, a Microsoft Support search lists plenty of pages which instruct
how to ENABLE Asian fonts, keyboards, characters etc., but nothing about how
to REMOVE unwanted Asian fonts, keyboards, characters etc. A lot of Service
Pack x descriptions discuss Asian fonts and add-ins, but again, not the
REMOVAL of unwanted Asian languages in document styles. And finally, note
that no weird Chinese or Asian characters, including the corner markers
everyone is concerned about in these posts, are appearing anywhere in the
document €“ the problem is just the language description of certain styles, in
a document I didnt create. So... can anyone tell me how to remove €ś(Asian)
Chinese (PRC)€ť from specific styles, when the Language window wont even
acknowledge it as being selected?
