Default editing (moving) footnotes

When I move a footnote (by dragging the reference mark) - it doesn't renumber
properly. That is, footnote 4 is dragged to the end of a paragraph, with no
intervening footnotes, so it should still be footnote 4 in its new location;
yet, Word renumbers it as footnote 5.

Is it possible that there is a Hidden footnote reference mark in the
paragraph? You may be able to find it if you display Hidden text, but you
can also use the browse arrows at the bottom of the vertical scroll bar to
Browse by Footnote.

Also, are you tracking changes? (though that would be more likely to prevent
rather than initiate a change in numbering)

I was using track changes. When I turned this off, the footnote numbered
properly when I moved it. Thank you for the help. Much appreciated.
