Default Word 2003 Normal.dot in use error

A couple users here are having a problem with Word 2003 (SP1). They access
an intranet site and open MS Word docs from there which open in Word 2003.
If the user opens a document via IE, it opens in Word successfully and user
is able to close Word without any problems. If there is a 2nd MS Word
document open already when user clicks on a document in the intranet website,
when she goes to close it, she gets the following error:

This file is in use by another application or user.
(C:\...\Normal.dot)

I did see the one hotfix referenced at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818953 but this user doesnt have Microsoft
Content Management Server (MCMS) Authoring Connector on the computer.
Ideas???
