Default Word crashes when I try to mail merge using Outlook recipients

When I try to create a mail merge letter in word, and try to select
recipiuents from an Outlook folder, word crashes.

In the wizard when I get the 'select recipients' pane I click 'select from
outlook contacts'. When I then click browse everything freezes and eventally
word closes and I'm asked to send an error report.

I have tried to start in Outloook at select recipients there and then click
mail merge in Outlook but on clicking nothing happens and everything freezes.

I am using Word and Outlook 2003 on laptop connected to home network
comprising one other machine.

Can you confirm/deny that when you "select recipients" you are opening an
Outlook Contacts folder and selecting one or more contacts, then clicking
Outlook Tools|Mail Merge... ? (I only ask because there may be other ways to
"select recipients" - perhaps as an experiment you could just open your
contacts, then try clicking Tools|Mail Merge...)

Does Outlook freeze as soon as you click the Tools|Mail merge... option? For
example, do you ever see a dialog box titled "Mail Merge Contacts" ? Or does
Outlook freeze at a later stage?

(also, which version of Windows?)

Default Word crashes when I try to mail merge using Outlook recipients

If I am in contacts and select say a couple of contacts, I click Tools Mail
merge and get the mail merge contacts screen. In this screen I select 'Only
selected contacts' and 'new document' and click OK. Nothing happens. The
window remains and nothing else appears.

If in Word and selecting mail merge I am asked if I want to select
recipients from Outlook Contacts. If I select this option and click browse
to find the relevant outlook location, word crashes - i do not get an
opportunity to select individual contacts.

I am using windows XP.

Thanks

Default Word crashes when I try to mail merge using Outlook recipients

I don't know what the problem is (other people have reported similar
problems), but here are some pointers that may help.

As a workaround, you may be able to use Outlook's Export facilities to
export your contact data to a file which you then use as the data source for
the merge.

There are a few Knowledgebase articles that may be relevant to the situation
where you are starting in Word - e.g.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322215/

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902327/

Although your system may not be experiencing the same symptoms, it may be
worth following the suggestions in those articles (basically they say
"install or re-install the Microsoft Data Access (MDAC) software" and
"recreate your Outlook profile")

It may also be worth making sure you have your Office CDs and trying an
Office Check and Repair (e.g. from Word's Help menu)

However, I doubt if either of those things is the cause when you initiate
the merge from Outlook. The main possible problems seem to me to be:
a. Outlook needs to create a file of exported contacts. If it cannot create
that file (e.g. because of file/folder permission problems) the process will
fail. This seems a bit unlikely in the scenario you describe, but if you can
locate your temp folder you can look for a file called OMM0.doc (or
similar). Or you can check "Permanent file" and provide a file name in the
Mail merge dialog box and see if Outlook can create that one.
b. Outlook opens Word using automation, creates or opens a mail merge main
document (depending on what you specified in the Mail merge.. dialog box),
and attaches it to the data source, OMM0.doc. Quite early in the process
here, I see a message pop up briefly saying that Outlook is trying to
connect to Word (or some such). Various things could go wrong with that
process (e.g. if you have a dialog box open in Word, automation may fail).
However, the only suggestion I can make is that you try initiating the
process with Word open, and without Word open, and see if that makes any
difference. It may also be worth disabling any Addins that you may have
installed in Outlook, and making sure you're not editing any Outlook
messgaes if you have Word set to be Outlook's text editor.
