Default how switch from double column to show a single

I want to produce a page which has two columns at the top, but mid page I
want to have only one column going across the page. How is this done?

Select the text you want in one column and format it as one column; Word
will take care of inserting the necessary section breaks. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/UsingColumns.htm and also
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting...panColumns.htm
