Default changing margins on 2nd page

Can anyone tell me how to set the margins so that the first page has one
margin (e.g. .5") and every page thereafter has a different margin (e.g.
1").
When I tried putting the cursor at the 2nd line of text on the first page
and went to FilePageSetup, set the top margin to 1", set "Apply to:" this
point forward. All the text from line 2 was put on a new page.

When I did the same thing with the cursor at the first line of the second
page, it formatted correctly, but if I added any text before that point, it
was placed on a separate page with the same margin as the first page.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you are trying to create letterhead, see here instead:

Insert a continuous section break after the first paragraph of page 1. Set
different top margins for section 1 and section 2, making sure to select
"Apply to this section" in each case. View in Normal mode to see the section
breaks.

Do _not_ do this. It will unnecessarily complicate your document. Use a
first-page-only header/footer and different ways to space that header footer
(including text boxes along one or both sides for side margins).

Take a look at: How to set up letterhead or some other document where you
want one header on the first page and a different header on other pages.
http://www.addbalance.com/word/headersfooters.htm This gives step-by-step
instructions. (It also has the following links)
