I have switched the spell checker on in options but it still doesn't work

When you say that it doesn't work, could you tell us what you have tried to
do, what you expected to happen, and what is actually happening?

Also, if you start a new document and while in that document go to:
Tools Language Set Language

What language is shown?

Is the box to skip checking spelling and grammar checked?
