Default Formatting issues with tab in Heading 3

In my Word document, I am typing different sections using the various Heading
styles. The numbering schema was fine from 2.3.1 to 2.3.9, but as soon as I
entered in 2.3.10, a bigger space was entered in between the number (2.3.10)
and the typed words. When I press the "Show/Hide" button, I see a small
arrow in between 2.3.9 and the typed words, but between 2.3.10 and the typed
words a larger arrow with more space appears and I don't know how to remove
that space. I just want it to look the same from 2.3.9 to 2.3.10. Any
suggestions?

Thank you!

Default Formatting issues with tab in Heading 3

That is a common problem, and it comes from not having a large enough indent
set in the Heading 3 style to accommodate larger numbers. Word automatically
inserts a tab between the paragraph number and the first letter of text.
That's the "small arrow" you're seeing. If the paragraph number is long
enough, that tab kicks over to the next tab setting. That's the extra space
you're seeing. You will need to set the hanging indent in that style so
there's enough space for the number and a little bit of space for the tab

You need to adjust the indent in two places: in Format - Paragraph and also
in Format - Bullets and Numbering. In Format - Paragraph, set the
Indentation to the position of the number in relation to the margin, and then
increase Special - Hanging to provide more distance between the number and
the text. Then go to Format - Bullets and numbering and set Number Position
- aligned at to the same number as the paragraph indentation, and set Text
Position - Tab Space After and Indent At to the same setting as the hanging
indent.

If I were you, I think I'd set the indent large enough for more than one
number to go to double digits. If you set it just large enough to
accommodate 2.3.10, someday you'll have a document that goes to 2.10.10.
Make sure it's big enough for that, too.

I hope this works for you.
