here do I go to stop the vertical split appearing on the left side of the
window. I go to Window on the Menu Bar and click on Remove Split, but it
appears every time I open WORD.

Given the symptoms, it sounds like you've saved Normal.dot in such a way
that you're seeing the split by default when you open Word. I would try the
steps shown he
