Default Passwords in Word 2007

I can't find a simple means of creating or changing a password for opening a
Word document and/or modifying a document. (Tools/Options/Save in Word 2000).
I've added the Encrypt button to the Quick Access Toolbar but it doesn't do
anything or show any options. In Review/Protect Document, the options for
protecting formatting or editing are not what I want.

When I open a Word 2000 passworded document in Word 2007, I have to give the
password, but when I then check in Review/Protect Document, nothing is
checked.

I really need and want the easy old 'create password to open' function.
Thanks!

When you are in the file, save as dialog, there is a Tools button in the
bottom left corner. Click it and pick General Options.

Oh wow! Thank you so much!

Please could Microsoft include this option in the 'Help' index so when those
of us coming from older versions search on 'password' we can find that info
as well as all the stuff that's irrelevant to the need for a simple document
password?

I just typed "password" into help here and the second search result is
"Set a password to open or modify a document, workbook, or
presentation". It is exactly what you are looking for.
When you have help open, does it say in the bottom right corner
"Connected to Office Online"?

What file format are you working with when you try using the Encrypt button?
Does going over the "FILE"/Prepare/Encrypt document command prompt you for a
password? (It does here.)

Uh-oh - no, it was 'offline'! I got what you got but as the first search
result when I changed that! Thanks again!

Hi Cindy - I couldn't find that command under the button where
'file/open/save' etc live, nor under any of the ribbons. But anyway,
thanks...I now know where to password the document!

This is all very well if you have not saved the document but what if you have
alredy saved it? Click on the Office button and select Prepare - Encrypt
Document and you can set the password here.

I agree that the help from Microsoft could be much clearer. Once you know
that the Tools button is in the SaveAS window it makes sence but when it says
click Tools and then General options we tend to look along the ribbon as we
did in the old way.
