I am trying to import symbols that are not in the set of three sybols sets
offered --- most notably the check mark. Any

Default Symbol sets

You'll find a checkmark in the Wingdings font. Have you also tried using the
character map? Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Character Map.
Somehow they seem easier to find here. Hope this helps.
