Outline Number Level 3 not restarting numbering.
I use styles and formatting consistently - along with templates. I am having
problems with my level 3 outline numbering in that is continues on consecutively throughout the document instead of restarting when it's supposed to. All the other levels restart just fine. I've attempted to fix the template, to no avail. |

Make sure the outline numbering is set up based on the rules laid out in

Outline Number Level 3 not restarting numbering.
I too am having trouble with my level 3 numbering.
I used Shauna Kelly's article "How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Microsoft Word document", which was incredibly helpful. Everything was going along smoothly and then the numbering went wonky. I am formatting a document that someone else created. I went in and set up styles and have 3 levels of headings. Heading 1: 1 Heading 2: 1.1 Heading 3: 1.1.1 Everything was fine while Heading 1 was 1. And when I got to 2, the next heading 2 changed to 2.1 and I thought I was home free. However, heading 3 (which should have been 2.1.1) reverted to 1.5.1 and the next heading 2 (which should have been 2.2) reverted to 1.6. Nothing changed in the heading style so I cant figure out why the numbering wouldnt continue. I made sure that none of the automatic update boxes were ticked. Any suggestions you can give me will be most appreciated. "Outline Number 3 not restarting" wrote: I use styles and formatting consistently - along with templates. Outline Number Level 3 not restarting numbering.
Go back to Format | Bullets and Numbering. Go through Format | Style for
Heading 1 (as Shauna explains) and make sure that each numbering level is linked to the appropriate style and that each level is set to restart after the level above. If your numbering levels are not linked to your heading styles, then it may be that you've managed to get your numbered paragraphs into different outline-numbered lists. -- Suzanne S. Outline Number Level 3 not restarting numbering.
Thanks Suzanne. I've done that so that, for instance, Heading 2 is set at
level 2, it is linked to style heading 2 and set to restart numbering after level 1. Although I created them in exactly the same way, Heading 3 seems to be starting after level 2, but I just can't get Heading 2 to restart after Level 1. "Suzanne S. Outline Number Level 3 not restarting numbering.
Suzanne - I think I can see a problem. When I go to customize outline
numbered list and look at the preview - it shows level 1 as heading 3 instead of heading 1. But I don't know how to change that. When I created the styles and headings I always used the highlighted outline as instructed and didn't change it. Thanks for your help. "Suzanne S. You need to set up all levels you will be using through modifying the style
for Heading 1. So, you go into the numbering dialog through that modify style dialog and access levels 2 and 3 through that as well. -- Charles Kenyon Word New User FAQ & Web Directory: http://addbalance.com/word Intermediate User's Guide to Microsoft Word (supplemented version of Microsoft's Legal Users' Guide) http://addbalance.com/usersguide See also the MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/ which is awesome! Charles - thank you so much. Now I understand that, all my numbering has

I think Shauna emphasizes this pretty clearly, when she says: "If you want
to change the numbering or the indentation of your headings, you must put your cursor in a Heading 1 style paragraph. Yes, even if you want to change the numbering or the indents of Heading 4 or Heading 7, you must start with your cursor in a Heading 1 paragraph." -- Suzanne S.
