Default Margins and tabs don't stay put in my Word document

I converted PowerPoint slides to a Word document. In Word, I set margins
and tabs, etc. Oftentimes when I open the doc to work on it (about a 200 page
doc) the type is scattered all over the page. After repairing it, sometimes
upon opening it again, the same thing has happened. I've spent more time
redoing this, than I have working on the doc itself. Help!!!! I have Office
2003, Student version, using it in XP. The PowerPoint sides came from
another source.
