Default Degree symbol (°) appears automatically - how to avoid?

What is it that causes the degree symbol to appear automatically? For
example, when typing ':' this is switched to '°:'. Can this be avoided?

Thank you,

Koen

The degree symbol indicates a space character. For more, see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/NonPrintChars.htm.

Space characters before punctuation marks seems like a
language-specific setting. Make sure that you have the correct
language defined for your text.

In certain languages (including French, I believe), the convention is to
have a space before a colon. To ensure that the colon stays with the
preceding text, Word inserts a nonbreaking space, which is what the degree
symbol indicates, as described in
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/NonPrintChars.htm.

As Stefan suggests, the likelihood is that your text is formatted for one of
the languages that observe this convention.
