Default TOC - want certain levels to only appear the first time they are in the document

Use a non-heading style for the second and subsequent occurrences of the
heading. That way, those paragraphs won't be picked up by the table of
contents.

i have a long document with a level-1 heading shown on 10 pages
straight. i don't want it to show up in the TOC 10 times.
the document was created through a mail merge so it would very tedious
to change all the text to a different level besides the first time it is
shown.
please help
thank you
